Course Description:

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it.  It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irritates the deserts that our lives have already become.”  C.S. Lewis

Many high schoolers struggle to understand the immense value in “dusty old books” that were written by men and women decades before them. We will seek to understand the value literature study can bring not only to your high school studies but your humanity in a lifelong pursing of knowledge.  Students will study genre, historical context, and character analysis of The Call of the WildThe Old Man and the SeaThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Interspersed between these works will be short stories of Mark Twain and others and also poetry selections.  Students will need a 1 inch three ring binder and will need access to the books and short stories.  These can be purchased or free online or in the library.  The syllabus will tell when each book starts and I will also give announcements about when it is time to find the next book. Students will write two short essays per semester and will have guided reading question sheets for additional grades.

Students must be able to access our Google Classroom page.  I will provide the link prior to class starting.

If you have a student with special needs, please contact the teacher directly to discuss.
