Course DescriptionThis lab is a detailed, hands-on study of the chemical world. It will be covering a variety of experiments and projects to reinforce the information in the textbook. (Prentice Hall Chemistry). The materials used are recognizable to the students. This helps the students to identify and understand that chemistry is all around them. This course correlates with the Chemistry Lecture. It is strongly recommended that the lecture and lab be taken together.

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 or currently taking

Dates: Year long lab

Where: Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6606 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne

Required text: Prentice Hall Chemistry Textbook (year doesn’t matter)

Time requirements: We will cover a chapter a week. There is homework, reading and vocabulary each week. There will be unit tests. This is a difficult class, students need to be able to spend 1 hour a day on a subject.

  • The students will be required to do higher math, this is why Algebra 1 was a prerequisite.

  • The students are not required to take notes from the lecture. I expect them to participate in the lecture. I can send power points to anyone who wants them each week.

Grades: Class- are based on homework, vocabulary, participation and tests.

Lab- are based on lab sheets, group participation, and quizzes

  • Class=1 credit, Lab=.5 credit /per semester

  • I encourage each student to outline the entire chapter each week as they are reading it. (I make my children do this)

Expectations: Students will complete readings and homework before class. Students will study the vocabulary and ask questions when needed. If a class is missed , it is the student’s responsibility to complete the readings and the homework, including labs. There will be no made up labs. If a student misses a lab, they will make up the points by writing a 1 page paper over the topic of that lab.

  • Homework will be due 1 week after the correlating lecture. This gives the students time to ask questions. If an assignment is not turned in with in 2 weeks of due date, the student will receive a zero

  • Homework will be stapled together and neat with no frayed ends. If not it will not be accepted.

  • All vocabulary will need to be written out and turned in.

  • All work is to be kept in a folder until the end of semester to refer back to.

  • Labs will follow same rules

  • It is the student’s responsibility to contact me with questions. I always answer in a timely manner. Email is the best way to contact me.

  • Students will behave and treat each other with respect. If a student has to be reprimanded, I will call parents. If it continues without resolution, students will be asked to leave the class without A REFUND. (I have never had this be an issue.)

  • If  a student has special needs, please contact the teacher directly to discuss.
