Course Description:

“A tale is but half told when only one person tells it.” -from The Saga of Grettir the Strong, written in Iceland

Many high schoolers struggle to understand the immense value in “dusty old books” that were written by or about men and women centuries before them. Medieval times can be a challenge to study until a student can see the common humanity of characters and begin to immerse themselves into their story. Students will study genre, historical context and character development and analysis.   We will read four to five novels from this selection: The Bronze Bow, Dragon and Raven, The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow, The Samuri’s Tale, and King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table.

Interspersed between these novels will be a selection of hymns, poetry, creeds, and confessions.  This class is meant to complement Becky Wilkin’s Medieval History class.  Students will complete guided reading sheets and will have 2 short essays per semester.  Students will also be expected to participate in class.  The books can be purchased or acquired from the library for free.  I will provide the shorter works for students or direct them to where they can find them through a link on our Google Classroom.  Students will also need a 1 inch binder.

Students must be able to access our Google Classroom.  Link will be provided before class starts.

If you have a student with special needs, please contact the teacher directly to discuss.
