Course Description:

Modern World Literature is a high school course that explores influential literary works from the late nineteenth century to the present, representing cultures and perspectives from around the world. Students will read novels, short stories, poetry, and essays that reflect the social, political, and cultural changes of the modern era. Through these texts, the course examines universal themes such as identity, conflict, justice, courage, and the human search for meaning.

Students will develop critical reading, analytical writing, and discussion skills while learning how historical events and cultural contexts shape literature. The course emphasizes thoughtful interpretation, comparative analysis, and clear expression of ideas through essays, presentations, and class discussions. By engaging with diverse voices and global perspectives, students will deepen their understanding of both literature and the modern world.

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze literary elements, evaluate themes across cultures, and thoughtfully respond to complex ideas presented in modern global literature.

The teacher will provide a reading list 1 month prior to the class beginning.  The books can be purchased or acquired from the library for free.  I will provide the shorter works for students or direct them to where they can find them through a link on our Google Classroom.  Students will also need a 1 inch binder.

Students must be able to access our Google Classroom.  Link will be provided before class starts.

If you have a student with special needs, please contact the teacher directly to discuss.
