Course Description:

Writing a strong research paper is an essential tool for any student.  Whether they will be heading to college or into the work force they may be called upon to research a position and structure their thoughts into a cohesive argument written for either a professor or employer.  Also researching is an essential skill of a Christian as we are to be researching and studying scripture all of our lives.  This class will take IEW skills you already practice and apply it to a paper with a researched argument and thesis.

From IEW’s website:

“Twenty-page paper? No problem!  Moving students beyond basic essay writing, this course teaches students to conduct research, manage note-taking, and craft a well-organized paper. Perfect for completing high school and college-level term papers.  Writing Research Papers is appropriate for high school students. In Part 1 students will answer the prompt “Are social networking sites good for our society?” Sources recommended for research explore the good and the bad related to social networking. The level of the reading materials is challenging and will require students to dig deeper to adequately utilize the information.  In Part 2 students will have the opportunity to develop their research skills, using the Internet alongside print sources as they answer the prompt “Internet: Hero or Villain?” Parental and teacher discretion is advised with online research. Part 3 invites students to choose their own prompt to complete a lengthy research paper, such as a senior project.”

This class will be graded on completed work and strength of the completed tasks.  This is not an IEW writing class where they learn how to write.  Each student should already be familiar with IEW’s processes before registering for this class.  I will also not be editing and correcting grammar as this is not the focus of this class.  I will ask students to do this on their own or to find others to edit their papers.  I am looking at thesis structure and support, research resources and the process they walk through to write a well informed and argued thesis.  If you have specific questions about how I will grade your student please contact me ahead of time.  Students must complete work on time and to the best of their ability.

Upon registering please remit a $25 registration fee (applied toward tuition on first day of class) and the $25 supply fee.
