Tuition / Fees: $250.00 tuition ($125.00 per semester) + $25.00 Supply Fee.     An enrollment fee of $25 plus the materials fee of $25 is due within 2 weeks of registration and will come off of your tuition. Both the supply fee and enrollment fee are non-refundable and will hold your place in the class.

Course Description:

Students will learn how to investigate, report, and write for publication. Students will become proficient in using correct grammar and punctuation according to the Associated Press Association standards. Students will be able to compose articles of length that demonstrate understanding of appealing to particular audiences through appropriate journalism techniques. They will build upon their vocabulary through research, discussion, and presentation. As a class, we will create a printed newspaper, and possibly a literary magazine, designed for publication and sale. Students will also create a professional portfolio of their works that they can use in future interviews and endeavors in journalism. Students can expect to spend up to 10 hours per week investigating and developing their stories. They will also be encouraged and guided to pursue writing contests and college journalism programs.

Suggested grades will be based on in-class discussion, readings in and outside of class, class participation, research and investigation, and writing pieces. All students will contribute their writing pieces in a newspaper twice per semester. 

Prerequisite: Students should be able to write paragraphs of description with appropriate punctuation and sentence structure before taking this class. This is a two semester class worth 2 credits of high school electives on a high school transcript. Second semester does build upon the first. Those who wish to enroll in the second semester only, please discuss with Mrs. Bell before enrolling.
