Course Description: If you have a student, who’s already worked through a couple of IEW theme-based courses they may enjoy and benefit from this class. The nine units will be covered, and basics of the writing process and grammar reinforced. However, instead of source texts and specific topics being supplied, students will be guided to choosing their own subject matter and finding some of their sources. There will be opportunities to practice narrowing a subject to the needed number of topics and determine essay length. In addition to the types of essays covered in the theme-based books we will also be learning about timed essays and a few more types of inventive writing. This class is open to both junior and senior high students. While all students will be covering the same lessons and have similar topics, more experienced writers will be given longer versions of some of the papers. Purchasing a student book from IEW is not needed for this class but all students will need a binder I’m putting together that includes notes and checklists for all the assignments and helps pages covering the style techniques. The cost of that binder is $15.
